I am Heather Smith, The Midwest Mama. I reside in the Chicago area, but was raised in Michigan’s beautiful Eastern Upper Peninsula. I call myself “Mom” to four kids – 1 human, 3 furry (kitties!). My son, Owen, was born in November 2013.
Prior to turning 30 in 2012, I had never considered having children. In fact, I even voiced my opinion publicly on not wanting to have kids my entire life. In 2012, I discussed having kids with my husband several times. Each time we talked about it, I felt myself considering it more and more. When I turned 30 in November 2012, “Mommy Mania” began. It was like someone just flipped a switch; all of a sudden I wanted a baby! One of my friends told me throughout my 20’s that once I hit 30, I’ll want a kid. Wow, was she right! Now, with a newborn in tow, I’m learning Motherhood one diaper at a time.
I read every book I could get my hands on during pregnancy. From month-by-month pregnancy books to raising a child “the French way”. I still keep up-to-date on blogs, news stories, medical journals, books, magazines, Twitter feeds, Facebook pages, etc. to learn all I can about new information, medical findings, parenting techniques, baby gear and more. I’m always reading something, while blogging and posting to Facebook and Twitter.
I am by NO MEANS an expert on anything related to pregnancy, parenting, babies, etc., but I choose to share my opinion, reviews and information I find relevant to pregnant women and new and veteran moms. During pregnancy, I read a lot of blogs and Twitter feeds which helped me through the ups and downs of pregnancy. I was so glad other moms were there for me in the form of their experiences and opinions. I hope information I post here is helpful to moms everywhere!
